Sound Engineer - Lao Wu

I met Lao Wu through a friend in the headphone enthusiast circle. My friend introduced him, saying he was a good person with rich experience in audio equipment and had been in the field for many years. After two years of getting to know each other, we became good friends.

Listening to Lao Wu's stories, I learned that he was born in a small village in Hunan in the 1970s. In those days of material scarcity, having enough to eat and wear was considered an ideal life. His family was quite poor, and their old house was perched on a hillside. In his childhood, he was timid and didn't have many playmates, so he often sat alone in front of his house, quietly gazing at the trees ahead. However, his favorite pastime was venturing into the woods to listen to various sounds – bird songs, insect chirps, the rustling of leaves in the wind, and more. He didn't just listen with his ears but also felt them in his heart. From that moment, sounds became his best companions. He mentioned a period when the weather was gloomy with constant rain. While his father complained about the weather affecting agricultural production, Lao Wu was delighted because he had become captivated by the sound of rain. Over time, he immersed himself in the world of sound and couldn't escape its allure.

Lao Wu emphasized that as an audio technician, having a keen sensitivity to sound was essential. Sensitivity to sound isn't merely about identifying various sounds but also about using your ears to differentiate and feel them, analyzing different auditory experiences in your brain, and accurately describing these acoustic characteristics in words. He believed that accumulating life and work experiences would enhance one's sensitivity to sound. Additionally, systematic hearing training was highly effective. He mentioned that he naturally and unknowingly developed exceptional listening skills during this time.

During his primary school years, the village installed a high-volume speaker that could carry sound over a long distance. One day, the speaker played "Yi Jian Mei" sung by Fei Yuqing, and Lao Wu felt the deep emotional resonance of the song for the first time. He was profoundly moved by that unique voice. Even after more than 30 years of being an audiophile, that voice still echoed in his ears. He felt that the seed of his love for music was planted in his young heart that day, and his passion for music had been unstoppable ever since.

Lao Wu's musical preferences evolved as he grew older. He liked various music genres and artists at different stages of his life, including light music, classical, country, jazz, rock, and heavy metal. He was a loyal fan of artists like Jiang Dawei, Yang Hongji, Liu Huan, Cai Qin, Na Ying, Zhao Chuan, Teresa Teng, Luo Dayou, Zhang Yusheng, Tong Ang, Zhang Yusheng, and Lao Lang, among others. His musical tastes were diverse, and he had no limitations. However, he particularly loved piano compositions, country folk songs, and solo performances on various instruments. He also played some musical instruments himself, including the flute, harmonica, and drums. He even practiced the guitar for a few years during his university days. In college, he nearly joined a band because of his passion for music. Nevertheless, Lao Wu had his own aspirations. In college, he chose to major in electronic engineering and started experimenting with audio equipment and amplifiers. This marked the beginning of his journey into hardware, and he felt a special connection to the audio equipment he crafted.

After graduating from college, Lao Wu worked at Audio King for eight years. He began by working on the basic speaker units and learned from some of the top audio engineers in the country. He dedicated himself to learning the craft and later went to the California Music Institute in the United States for two years of advanced studies, reaching new heights in audio theory. He made significant contributions to the design of audio projects for companies like YAMAHA, JBL, PIONEER, and others. In the following years, his work expanded to include the design and development of headphone units. In short, his work experience during that period laid a solid foundation for the realization of his dreams.

Lao Wu mentioned that he only truly understood the challenges of life and the complexities of human relationships after entering the workforce. This deepened his understanding of music. He loved high-quality audio equipment, but making a living wasn't easy, and the prices of slightly higher-end audio gear were beyond his means. In pursuit of good sound quality, he gradually shifted his focus to headphones. However, he also observed a phenomenon in the headphone industry. High-quality products from well-known brands were often expensive, creating a monopoly, while some brands prioritized aesthetics and marketing over actual sound quality, resulting in overpriced products. Lao Wu felt regretful that high-quality headphone products couldn't be accessible to ordinary consumers due to their price. So, he had a dream: to establish a unique headphone brand and introduce affordable yet high-quality headphones for music enthusiasts. However, he lacked expertise in design and structure, and he hadn't found like-minded partners to collaborate with, so he couldn't turn his dream into reality.

It wasn't until a few years ago, due to his job, that Lao Wu met two fellow music enthusiasts, Lao Zhang and another engineer who specialized in electronic amplifier and decoding. They were engineers with expertise in different aspects of audio equipment, and they shared the same dream. With similar ages and complementary skills, they decided to team up. After thorough preparation, in 2016, their dream started to take flight as they founded their own brand, "Wimlim." Lao Wu mentioned that their dream was to design headphones that were affordable for the masses but could deliver the sound quality of much more expensive products from other brands. They aimed to create a headphone brand with exceptional value for money and provide affordable products to a broader audience of music lovers. Following this philosophy, their first product was released. After hundreds of iterations and adjustments over two years, they finally achieved satisfactory results.

Lao Wu often emphasized that there was no "best" in terms of sound quality, only "better." The team members of the Wimlim brand needed to maintain a resilient mindset, constantly explore, accumulate knowledge, and have the courage to strive for excellence. This was the path to creating more classic products.
